DECOLONISING RELIGION
Decolonising Religion is a collaborative teaching project exploring how religion, race and gender can be taught differently. It brings together educators, students and contributors to think critically about whose knowledge is centred in the classroom, how inherited ways of studying religion shape what we teach, and how lived experience can open up different ways of knowing.
The project COMES out of the Religion, Race and Gender module TAUGHT IN THE THEOLOGY AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES DEPARTMENT AT King’s College London TO creates a space for sharing teaching, recorded conversations, student work and resources beyond the classroom.
WHY DECOLONISING RELIGION?
The study of religion has been shaped by particular histories, institutions and assumptions about what counts as knowledge. These histories have influenced whose voices are treated as authoritative, which traditions are centred, and how religion itself is defined and represented.
Decolonising Religion asks what becomes possible when we make those structures visible. Rather than treating decolonisation as a finished task or a simple matter of diversifying a reading list, the project approaches it as an ongoing practice of questioning, listening and rethinking how knowledge is produced and shared.
Race, gender, power and lived experience are therefore not additions to the study of religion. They are central to understanding how religion is encountered, practised, represented and taught.
FROM THE CLASSROOM
The project developed through the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of Religion, Race and Gender. The classroom became a space for bringing scholarship into conversation with lived experience, contemporary culture, media, creative practice and student perspectives.
DecolonisingReligion.com extends those conversations beyond the module. Recorded classes, guest contributions, teaching materials and commissioned student work are brought together here as an evolving resource for students, educators and anyone interested in thinking differently about religion, race and gender.
